In the modern era, the meaning of gaming has changed. No longer will we find gamers who shut themselves in their room, staring at a screen, playing solo campaigns for hours on end. Nah. Us gamers have evolved past that stage. Now its more of a global gaming community than disconnected players spread out on far corners of the earth. And surely we should take pride in doing so.

However, it has majorly been a revolutionary genre which has lead us to this stage of social gaming. Yes, MMORPG's are what I'm talking about. They are sensational. Never before has a game united the gaming community on a single platform and on such a large scale too. These Massively Multiplayer Online games are HUGE, and that is no exaggeration. With millions of players logged in from all over the world, this experience will be one to remember. Here are the top FIVE of the MMORPGs which truly define the meaning of MMO's.

Are you ready?

5. EverQuest

No MMO list is complete without Everquest. This was the first of its kind. I call it the predecessor of all successful MMOs. Everquest simply had something the average gamer had never seen; a fully explorable 3D world. The graphics are a bit outdated by now, but dont let them fool you. This game is brilliant.

Even more so is the stage it set for the future. It defined how each player had a very important role to play. It introduced the fun of exploring and questing. Finally, it brought forth the idea of a social gaming network which was to be adapted by more successful games for years to come.

Simply put, this is the ROOT of all MMOs today.

4. EVE Online

Here's a game which changed the way people look at MMOs. Set in outer space, it is paradise for the more techy gamers. The community is huge, and the game is no less. In fact, the setting is one of the most gigantic of the list. Its not for everyone though because it uses strong mechanics and complex features to achieve its outstanding gameplay. Amongst this list, EVE Online has the longest learning curve.

However, its fan base shows how nevertheless, it is still quite popular. You see once you do get into the world of EVE there is no getting out. With countless stars around you and the ever-changing map, you won't ever get enough of it.

Yes. A map which changes. Every single second. This means that when you log back into the game, it will be very different from what it was. The world of EVE is a living being in and of itself. Can you keep up?

3. Star Wars: The Old Republic

"The Force is Strong in this one"

Sorry, but i just couldn't stop myself. ^.^

So Bioware managed to do just what we needed. Star Wars: The Old Repulic has stood out as a truly awe-inspiring release. However, i must warn you, it is very difficult in the beginning. How? Well...

JEDI OR SITH?

That is one of the hardest stages to pass in Star Wars: The Old Republic. Which side to join? Took me three hours before i finally decided.

Whichever side you choose, you get to live the fantasy you've all dreamed of. One cannot deny the awesomeness of this game. With an amazing story-line and catchy graphics, we couldn't have expected any better. Simply put, this was the game everybody wanted and Bioware gave it to them.
Oh, and you get to wield light-sabers.

And its free.

Go play it.

2. Guild Wars 2

One word: AMAZING!

Guild Wars 2 is one of the best MMOs out there and it claims the second place in our list due to its uniqueness and its diversity. This is not like any other MMO. It uses key features and a unique idea to MMO gameplay. For players who are bored with the same old, try this for a fresh start. The graphics are surreal and the story line is so gripping you just cant stop playing it. With new content added every now and then, there is always something to do.

Moreover, its the diversity in game which truly sets it apart. Players of same classes may have very different stats because of their items. Its all up to you. In fact, the story kind of closes in around every player and your choices affect gameplay. Everything has consequences and benefits. Leveling and questing have never been so much fun as they are in Guild Wars 2. Defeating a camp of orcs doesn't mean you've got them forever. You might notice them regrouping in caves nearby. Its the small details like this which make the game extremely lively.

With a growing community and a brilliant expansion coming up, Guild Wars 2 is a must play!

1. World of Warcraft

Again?

Yep.

World of Warcraft is well, its wow! Now, being a WoW fanatic myself, I think there is nothing left to say. The name itself is enough to ignite nostalgia in countless MMO gamers, because this game has truly been a sensation. Over the years WoW has had the largest fanbase and has millions of subscribers to cover up the finances. There have been many expansions to the game; from the original Vanilla to the legendary WOTLK to the unique Mists of Pandaria; each on of them has kept us glued to our seats while playing them.

But just when we thought that maybe Blizzard has had enough, they came up with a new expansion. And guess what? It is awesome.

To know what makes WOW the king of MMOs, you gotta play it yourself. WoW is so damn huge that one just cannot describe this spectacle in words. Its popularity is miles ahead of its competitors and no MMO has gotten close to achieving what WoW has. The best of the genre has a lot to offer; from the plains of Azeroth to the dark Outlands, you will never have seen a game this massive. You can even get a freaking haircut! How cool is that?

You see even when they start to slow down on the subscriber numbers; Bam! Another amazing expansion and they're back. By the looks of it, Blizzard has no intention to stop. And to be honest, until some game does something even more revolutionary and exceptional than WoW, I dont see an end to its reign. I wonder how long it will take for WoW to finally pass on the crown for the Best MMORPG of all time.

Some say he’s half man half fish, others say he’s more of a seventy/thirty split. Either way he’s a fishy bastard.
